FULL STORY # Homeless man finds himself at home in the trees
Khalil is back out on the road after municipality trimmed his house

The traditional images that come to mind when thinking of tree houses or tree dwellers are those of the Johann David Wyss’ Swiss Family Robinson or Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan of the Apes. Three Syrians in a tree beside a Beirut carpark is not. Yet in front of a residential apartment building in Manara, in the midst of a thick and majestic rubber tree, one man has lived, with two others sleeping over one or two nights a week, until a few days ago. A makeshift bed is made out of an old window shutter and a minuscule ratty old mattress remains in the tree. It seems to be all Bassim Khalil needs. Propped up and balanced between the branches, intertwined among the abundant leaves, all comfort, privacy and shelter are provided.
